Science

The study of Science at St Joseph’s Catholic High School encourages students to jump into the exciting realms of imagination and knowledge, through engaging and challenging learning experiences. Students are inspired to develop a love and passion for Science in order to become reflective, life long learners.

Students are given opportunities to engage in their love of Science through; the study of interesting and relevant units of work, the exciting activities offered at Science Club every fortnight, various field trips and the Science Research EXPO.

Stages 4 and 5 – Year 7 to 10 Science

The study of Science in Stages 4 and 5 develops students’ values and attitudes, investigative skills, communication skills, knowledge and understanding within broad areas of science that encompass the traditional disciplines of Physics, Chemistry, Biology and the Earth Sciences. As well as acquiring scientific knowledge and skills, students apply their understanding to everyday life and develop an appreciation of science as a human activity. Students learn about the need to conserve, protect and maintain the environment, the use and importance of technology in advancing science and the role of science in developing technology. Students also develop an appreciation of, and skills in, selecting and using resources and systems to solve problems.

Stage 6 – Preliminary and HSC Electives

Elective courses offered in year 11 and 12 provide students with a range of fascinating subjects that allow them to develop practical skills and knowledge in a variety of Sciences. The excellent resources and facilities at St Joseph’s give students opportunities to achieve their potential through dynamic and engaging activities. Students in the senior years are able to specialise in one or more of the following subjects:
