Mathematics

Mathematics is a reasoning and creative activity employing abstraction and generalisation to identify, describe and apply patterns and relationships.

Learning in Mathematics

Mathematics at St Joseph’s develops students’ understanding of mathematical concepts and their ability to apply mathematical reasoning to real-world problems. Aligned with the NESA Mathematics syllabus, the curriculum builds confidence, accuracy and problem-solving skills essential for further study and everyday life.

Stage 4 and Stage 5 (Years 7–10)

Students engage with the core strands of:

  • Number and Algebra
  • Measurement and Geometry
  • Statistics and Probability

Learning focuses on reasoning, problem-solving and the use of mathematical language and representations. Technology is used to support conceptual understanding and data analysis.

Stage 6 (Years 11–12)

Senior courses are designed to meet diverse learning needs and pathways and may include:

  • Mathematics Standard
  • Mathematics Advanced
  • Mathematics Extension 1
  • Mathematics Extension 2

These courses develop increasingly sophisticated analytical and abstract reasoning skills in alignment with NESA HSC expectations.

Skills Developed

  • Logical reasoning and problem solving
  • Quantitative analysis
  • Accuracy and precision
  • Mathematical literacy for life and work

Learning Beyond the Classroom

  • Mathematics competitions and challenges
  • Enrichment and extension opportunities
