Studying a language is exciting and interesting. It is a unique subject area that offers many benefits and opportunities.

Learning in Languages

Languages education at St Joseph’s Catholic High School develops students’ communication skills, cultural understanding and global awareness. Aligned with the NESA Languages syllabus, the study of languages equips students with valuable linguistic skills while fostering respect for cultural diversity and intercultural understanding.

Through learning a language, students gain insight into how language and culture shape identity, relationships and perspectives in an increasingly connected world.

Stage 4 (Years 7–8)

In Stage 4, all students study Italian or German, developing foundational skills in:

  • Listening, speaking, reading and writing
  • Vocabulary and grammatical structures
  • Cultural understanding and intercultural awareness

Students engage with authentic texts and interactive learning experiences that build confidence and curiosity in language learning.

Stage 5 (Years 9–10)

In Stage 5, students may elect to continue their language studies through Italian. Learning focuses on:

  • Expanding language structures and vocabulary
  • Communicating ideas and information in more complex contexts
  • Understanding cultural practices, values and perspectives
  • Applying language skills to real-world and personal contexts

This stage supports students to refine their communication skills and deepen cultural understanding.

Stage 6 (Years 11–12)

In Stage 6, students may study Italian as part of their HSC program. The course aligns with NESA requirements and supports students to:

  • Communicate effectively in spoken and written Italian
  • Analyse and interpret a range of texts
  • Develop intercultural competence
  • Apply language skills to academic and real-world contexts

Studying a language in the senior years supports pathways into tertiary study, international opportunities and careers requiring strong communication skills.
