Diverse Learning

At St Joseph’s Catholic High School, we are committed to providing an inclusive learning environment where every student is known, valued and supported to achieve their personal best.

Guided by Catholic values and the priorities of Catholic Education Diocese of Wollongong, we recognise and respond to the diverse learning, social and emotional needs of our students.

Our approach to diverse learning is grounded in dignity, respect and high expectations. We work in partnership with students, families, teachers and external professionals to ensure all students can access learning, experience success and grow with confidence.

Inclusive Classroom Support

Many students at St Joseph’s receive support within mainstream classrooms. This support is designed to assist students who may require additional help with learning, assessment, organisation, wellbeing or social and emotional development.

Support may include:

  • Classroom adjustments and differentiation
  • Targeted literacy and numeracy support
  • Assessment adjustments in line with NESA guidelines
  • Small group or individual learning support
  • Social and emotional support strategies
  • Collaboration between teachers, support staff and families

These supports aim to ensure students can engage meaningfully with the curriculum while developing independence and confidence as learners.

Support Classes – Stage-Based Programs

St Joseph’s also offers stage-based Support Classes for students with multi-categorical disabilities who require a higher level of support.

Students enrolled in Support Classes:

  • Follow NESA-approved Life Skills outcomes in Stages 4, 5 and 6
  • Engage in age-appropriate learning experiences aligned with their individual needs
  • Participate in school life alongside their peers wherever possible

Students in Support Classes are included in:

  • School liturgies, prayer and faith experiences
  • Excursions, camps and retreats
  • Peer support programs
  • Selected elective subjects (where appropriate)

The Record of School Achievement (RoSA) documents completed courses for students undertaking Life Skills programs, in line with NESA requirements.

Wellbeing, Faith and Personal Growth

A strong focus of the Diverse Learning program is the holistic development of each student. Spiritual growth, wellbeing and personal development are central to our approach.

Students are supported through:

  • Prayer and reflection opportunities
  • A nurturing and respectful learning environment
  • Explicit teaching of social and emotional skills
  • A strong emphasis on wellbeing, confidence and self-advocacy

We believe every student has unique gifts and strengths, and we seek to nurture these through meaningful learning and supportive relationships.

Transition and Post-School Pathways

Preparing students for life beyond school is an important focus of our Diverse Learning programs.

Support may include:

  • Individual transition planning
  • Work readiness and life skills development
  • Participation in Stage 6 taster programs with external providers
  • Links with TAFE, NDIS disability services and post-school options
  • Support with post-school pathways and transitions

Students complete their schooling with either a Higher School Certificate or Life Skills credentialing, and are supported to transition into further education, training, employment or supported placements, depending on individual goals and needs.

Partnership with Families

We value strong partnerships with families and recognise parents and carers as key partners in their child’s learning journey. Regular communication, collaboration and shared planning ensure support is responsive, respectful and student-centred.

Our Commitment

No matter the pathway, St Joseph’s Catholic High School is committed to fostering lifelong learning, independence and dignity. Through inclusive practices, targeted support and a strong pastoral approach, we support all students to grow, belong and prepare for a meaningful life beyond the classroom.
