Our Patron Saint

On the 19th of March we celebrate the Feast of Saint Joseph. Joseph is the patron saint of many things but is more commonly recognised as the patron and protector of the Catholic Church.

Our Patron, Saint Joseph

Saint Joseph, the husband of Mary and foster father of Jesus, is the patron of our school and a model of quiet strength, faith and integrity.

Although the Gospels tell us little about Joseph, what we do learn speaks powerfully. He was a carpenter from Nazareth, a descendant of King David, and described as a “just” or righteous man. When faced with uncertainty and challenge, Joseph chose trust in God. In faith and obedience, he accepted Mary and the child Jesus into his care, protecting and guiding them with humility and courage.

Joseph is never recorded as speaking in the Scriptures. Instead, his faith is shown through action — through steadfast love, hard work and faithful presence. Tradition suggests that he likely died before Jesus began his public ministry, which is why he does not appear during the later Gospel events. Yet his influence in shaping the early life of Jesus is profound.

Symbols associated with Saint Joseph include the carpenter’s square, representing his trade and dignity of work, and the lily, symbolising purity, virtue and his faithful commitment to Mary.

In 1955, Pope Pius XII established the Feast of Saint Joseph the Worker, recognising him as a model for all who labour with honesty and dedication. Joseph reminds us that greatness is often found not in words, but in quiet faithfulness and service.

At St Joseph’s, we seek to reflect the spirit of our patron — living with humility, acting with integrity, working diligently, and trusting in God’s plan.
